Edward Matthew Rice, born July 28, 1960, in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American Roman Catholic Bishop: Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and Titular Bishop of Sufes. On December 1, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI designated the Edward M. Rice to become Auxiliary Bishop-elect of St. Louis, Missouri, and Titular Bishop of Sufes. He succeeded the retiring St. Louis Auxiliary Bishop Robert Joseph Hermann, 76, whose resignation was accepted that same day by Pope Benedict upon his having reached the age of 75 in August 2009. Auxiliary Bishop Rice's episcopal consecration took place on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. Robert James Carlson, the Metropolitan Archbishop of St. Louis, was the principal consecrator. Bishops John R. Gaydos and Richard F. Stika, were the principal co-consecrators. Raymond Leo Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura and Archbishop Emeritus of St. Louis, and Rice's predecessor, the retiring Auxiliary Bishop Hermann, were also in attendance. Auxiliary Bishop Rice was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop J.
